Writing a book about my first horse has been in the back of my mind for over twenty years. I even had a few false starts scribbled in notebooks or pictured in daydreams.
Her name was Ellie.
There is daunting responsibility that falls on a crazy horse girl’s first horse. Sometimes the horse is a tirelessly cheerful soul with a maximum level of tolerance and empathy for their young charge. Other times, well, the responsibility falls on a horse like Ellie. Her journey was rough and I had to prove myself in order to ride her. She was demanding, opinionated, and the best teacher I could have asked for. Ellie taught me to be a horsewoman. The return was her absolute loyalty and enduring bravery. She deserves this book.
